It is not everyday that a bookworm like me achieves such a thing as to visit the most beautiful bookshop in the world. And where is this bookshop located? In Porto, a city in the North of Portugal. And being Portuguese myself, I was desperate for years to step into this bookshop, without having the opportunity to do it.
Lello & Irmao Bookshop is one of the oldest bookshops in Portugal, with 135 years old, and its beauty comes from the beautiful carved wooden walls, the stained glass in the ceiling, and mostly the beautiful staircase that will definitely remind you of Harry Potter. Yup. J.K. Rowling used to teach English in Porto and she frequented the Lello Bookshop and has stated it was an inspiration for her writing.
So this year, while staying in sunny and warm Portugal in a 2 weeks holiday from greyish London, I finally got the chance to visit the bookshop and just be a happy silly bookworm.
Unfortunately, as it happens with every single place becoming famous, the bookshop was quite crowded, full with tourists and I could barely take decent photos or even look to the books. Since last year you need to pay a symbolic amount of €3 to get inside, but then you can buy a book and discount the value in its price. I think it’s worth it 🙂 But please judge for yourself!
Have you ever visited this bookshop or any others that have inspired you as or not as a bookworm?
